Technology and Information Management
When dealing with technologies, a sustainable non-profit organization:
- Understands if and how technology supports its programs. Note that technology could be anything from telephones for a Distress Centre, to refrigerators for safe food storage to computer hardware/software;
- Uses computer technology for efficient management of information;
- Possesses adequate hardware and software resources to support its technology needs and ensures that these are maintained;
- Develops a strategic technology and implementation plan;
- Employs sufficient protection from viruses, mal-ware and spy-ware;
- Employs adequate maintenance and back-up systems to ensure safety of data and efficiency of operations;
- Includes practices and policies for the use of computer systems and Internet use, including donated equipment;
- Communicates practices and policies for the use of computer systems and Internet use;
- Provides training to those staff and volunteers involved in the use of technologies;
- Preserves the integrity of its technology through security and backup procedures; and
- Follows a plan for evolving its technologies in support of its mission.
