Communications Planning and Implementation

A communications plan details a variety of mechanisms for building effective informal and formal internal and external communications. Communications are designed to inform or raise awareness.

  • A sustainable non-profit organization will have a communication plan that:

  • Supports and fosters internal (staff and volunteers) commitment and adherence to the organization’s mission, vision and values. It will link to the strategic, business, operational and marketing plan;

  • Clearly communicates decisions and the decision-making process to internal and external stakeholders, including funders;

  • Defines key messages;

  • Ensures brand management;

  • Fosters member understanding of organizational issues;

  • Involves stakeholders in the planning process;

  • Is reviewed and updated regularly;

  • Links to strategic and business plans; and

  • Provides for measurement of effectiveness.
